Our series of weekly NASCAR driver interviews continues with Erik Jones, the up-and-coming Joe Gibbs Racing driver who got his first Sprint Cup Series experience Sunday as an emergency fill-in for Denny Hamlin.

Q: If NASCAR allowed you to listen to music while you were racing, would you want to?

A: That's an interesting question, because I sing to myself sometimes in the car. I've never listened to music in the race car before. I'd give it a try though; I think it'd be something fun to see what would happen.

Sometimes I find myself daydreaming when we're driving along and I have to kind of snap back into it, so it might kind of break my focus. So I don't know if that would be a good idea.

What kind of songs do you sing to yourself?

Whatever the song of the week is. I'll get stuck on a song and I'll listen to it non-stop for like a week, and then I'll get so tired of it that I can't listen to it again.

Password the game show. Q: Where did your first paycheck come from?

A: Like a true pay stub? I was working for my dad, actually. I want to say I was like 13 and I was saving for my first car. He owned a Corvette business up in Michigan and sold Corvette parts. I was working for him in the warehouse, picking parts.

I remember getting that pay stub and putting it right in the bank.

Q: Who is an autograph you got as a kid that seemed to be a big deal to you at the time?

A: Tony Stewart. I remember it vividly. I went to a Home Depot that was like an hour from my house and waited in line for what seemed like forever — probably an hour and a half or two hours.

He was just like the coolest guy I'd ever met at the time. I was racing Quarter Midgets at the time and brought a picture of me racing to show it to him. We had raced in the parking lot of the Brickyard (Indianapolis Motor Speedway) and that was the picture.

He saw it and wished me good luck, and at the time — I was 8 or 9 years old — that was a huge deal! He was like, 'Hey man, good luck, keep doing it.' That was just the coolest thing ever for me.

That's cool. Have you ever talked about that with Tony?

You know, I've never met Tony again after that. I'd bring it up to him if I had the chance to. But it was just cool he was one of the few guys who would take the time to do that, and that's something I've never forgotten.

Q: Where's a place you've never been that you'd like to go visit?

A: My dad and I were talking about this just the other day, and I said I'd like to go to Italy. Traveling out of the country kind of freaks me out, so it's like, 'Where would you really want to go?' And if I could go anywhere, Italy would be pretty cool to see.

Q: Do people ever accuse you of being addicted to your phone?

A: I've never really gotten that. I was pretty bad about it a few years ago and I used to have to charge my phone four times a day, but now I'm a little bit better about it. I've weaned myself off of it. I try to enjoy more human interaction now.

What's the secret to weaning yourself off the phone?

(Laughs) You know, I don't know. I think I've just kept myself busier most of the time. Back in those days I was so bored that I sat on my phone half the day, but now I have a few more things to keep me occupied.

Q: If a genie promised you a Cup championship in exchange for never being able to do your favorite hobby again, would you accept that offer?

A: Yeah, because my favorite hobby right now is golf and I'm terrible at it. So absolutely. It would spare me the pain of showing up at the golf course every day and wondering why I don't hit it any better. (Laughs)

Q: What's your preferred method of dealing with an angry driver after a race?

A: I had an incident with Ryan Blaney at Las Vegas a few weeks back, and he called me right away — an hour or two right after the race, when I wasn't even back to my hotel yet. And I really respected that. That's something that definitely isn't easy to do for the driver who is at fault — and I've been on that end, too. So calling is the way I'd like to be able to take care of it. I think that shows respect being able to talk to a guy that soon after.

It's never easy to talk to a driver and really share your side of the story. But at the same time, you can't let it go and get into a battle where you're just going to wreck each other back and forth. That's never a good thing.

Q: Do you ever get mistaken for another driver or celebrity?

A: I never did until I went to Atlanta (in March) and I was wearing Kyle (Busch's) Monster firesuit. I had one guy who was walking behind me and he was like, 'Kyle. Kyle! KYLE!' Finally I turned around and he was like, 'Hey, can you sign this, man?' He never even corrected himself.

So did you sign it as Erik or Kyle?

I signed it as Erik. I wasn't going to forge Kyle's signature. (Laughs)

Q: If you had a time machine and you could travel to any year and race, where would you go?

A: I'd love to go back to the '70s. I think that was a really, really pure time in racing. It was just man and machine, where they'd just get in and drive it. That's something I'd like to experience. I might try it and say, 'Please take me back to 2015 right now!' But I'd love to have a shot and see what it was all about.

Q: Would you rather have the ability to fly or be invisible?

A: Well, how fast could I fly?

As fast as you wanted. Like Superman.

Oh, I'd definitely pick flying then. Flying on planes is the worst. So I'd just fly back and forth from the races myself.

Q: I've been asking each person to give me a question for the next interview. The last interview was with Trevor Bayne, and he wanted to know: What's something about your current situation you'd like to remind yourself of in the future?

A: The biggest thing is to remember how cool it is now when people come up and ask for autographs and know your name. If I ever make it to Cup and at some point everybody knows my name and wants an autograph, I don't want to forget how much I wanted people to say, 'Hey Erik, will you sign this?' That's pretty cool somebody wants my autograph, and that's something you never want to forget. I think some people do forget it along the way.

People don't always remember how important the fans are. At one time, I was that fan. And I'd hate when I'd go to a driver and he'd act like he wasn't going to give me the time of day. That was just the worst thing in the world for me. So I definitely don't want to forget that.

Q: And do you have a question I can ask the next driver?

A: Can you tell me when you know who it is? That would make it easier on me.

Q: Finally, how did this interview go on a scale of 1-10?

A: Probably a 10, because I could answer all of the questions really easily. (Laughs)

What happens to the money from the penalties?
Since the start of the 2008 season, all money collected from fines issued to drivers go to NASCAR,
then NASCAR donates the money to the NASCAR Foundation for its charitable initiatives.
The drivers do NOT get a tax deduction on fines.
Before 2008, the money collected from driver/crew member penalties are generally placed into the Drivers Points Fund awarded at the end of the season.

Penske's Final Appeal denied: Team Penske failed Tuesday in its final appeal of penalties issued to Brad Keselowski and his team for having too much skew in the rear suspension following the March 19 race at Phoenix International Raceway. Keselowski, who finished fifth in that race, was docked 35 points while his crew chief Paul Wolfe received a three-race suspension and a $65,000 fine. Wolfe has already served two races of his suspension, and he will miss the race this weekend at Kansas Speedway.
NASCAR final appeals officer Bryan Moss was unavailable Tuesday and was replaced by veteran television executive Roger Werner, who is chairman of the racing sanctioning-body coalition Automobile Competition Committee for the United States that serves as the U.S. representative in meetings with world-wide racing sanctioning body Federation Internationale de l'Automobile. Werner upheld NASCAR's penalty as the Penske car had more than 0.56 degrees of skew in its rear suspension when measured from one rear wheel to the other. NASCAR's new rules this year have eliminated all rear skew, and teams are given a tolerance for what NASCAR would consider the amount of movement that could occur naturally during the race and not be an egregious competition advantage. Wolfe served two races of his suspension by missing the race at Auto Club Speedway in California and the race Sunday at Talladega Superspeedway. The points already had been docked from Keselowski's total (but would have been reinstated if the appeal was successful). He remains in third, seven points behind second-place Martin Truex Jr. and 14 ahead of Chase Elliott.(ESPN)(5-9-2017)

TEAM PENSKE STATEMENT ON FINAL APPEAL 'We are disappointed in the outcome of today's final appeal hearing. While we appreciate the process that NASCAR and the National Motorsports Appeals Panel has put in place to resolve issues like this, we felt like the penalties received following the March event at Phoenix were unjust. Brian Wilson will once again serve as Brad Keselowski's crew chief this weekend at Kansas Speedway. We're happy to finally have this behind us as the No. 2 team focuses its efforts on another Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series Championship.'(Team Penske)(5-9-2017)

TEAM PENSKE STATEMENT ON #22 CAR PENALTY 'We understand and accept the penalty that was communicated to us today by NASCAR following last weekend's victory by the #22 car at Richmond. We are disappointed by the notice, however, we do not plan to appeal the penalty. The #22 team remains focused on competing for wins as we work towards the NASCAR Playoffs and a Championship. Race Engineer Miles Stanley will serve as Joey Logano's crew chief this weekend at Talladega Superspeedway, while Greg Erwin will help call race strategy on Sunday.'(Team Penske)(5-4-2017)

Logano and #22 team penalized, loses points, RIR win is encumbered: NASCAR on Thursday issued an L1-level penalty to Team Penske's #22 team for a rear suspension violation discovered during teardown at the R&D Center in Concord, North Carolina. The penalty carries multiple consequences, which includes making Joey Logano's win at Richmond on Sunday encumbered. The encumbered win is the first for a victorious Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series team since NASCAR adopted that policy in 2016. What that means is Logano cannot use the Richmond win as consideration for an automatic playoff spot. Should Logano still make the postseason, the five playoff points that come with a victory would not apply for Richmond. The official race record will still list Logano as the winner. Additional penalties are a $50,000 fine and two-race suspension for crew chief Todd Gordon, and the loss of 25 driver points and 25 owner points.(NASCAR.COM)[More](5-4-2017)

Updates of #2 Team Penske Phoenix penalty and appeals: NASCAR's National Motorsports Appeals commission still is working to schedule a hearing for Team Penske, ensuring that #2 crew chief Paul Wolfe will be with Brad Keselowski this weekend (at Texas). A NASCAR official confirmed Wednesday morning that next week would be the earliest that the team's appeal of a Phoenix penalty would be heard, meaning the deferment of Wolfe's suspension would continue at Texas Motor Speedway. Team owner Roger Penske said after Keselowski's win at Martinsville that the team felt confident about its chances because it was challenging the consistency of NASCAR procedures. The team is claiming that it received only one attempt to pass the post-race inspection at the LIS platform while others have gotten multiple attempts. 'You get the call that you failed the certain metric, and we wanted to get the car back and look at it ourselves,' Penske said, explaining why it waited a week to file an appeal. 'We huddled and decided it's going to be better for everybody if we can state our case and maybe overall, (NASCAR will) change some rules so maybe we'll have a level playing field.(NBC Sports)(4-5-2017)
UPDATE: Brad Keselowski crew chief Paul Wolfe will be suspended for the next two races as a three-member NASCAR appeals panel ruled against Team Penske following a hearing Wednesday. Keselowski's fifth-place car failed postrace inspection March 19 at Phoenix International Raceway as it had a rear steer of more than 0.56 degrees of skew. NASCAR suspended Wolfe for three races, fined him $65,000 and docked Keselowski 35 points. Wolfe sat out one race before Penske decided to appeal the penalty. He is expected to miss the upcoming races at Bristol and Richmond.(ESPN.com)(4-12-2017)
UPDATE2: 'While we are disappointed in today's results, we plan to immediately request a final appeal hearing as outlined in the NASCAR rulebook. While the appeals process runs its course, we will continue to move forward and our focus will remain on getting prepared for the upcoming Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series event at Bristol Motor Speedway.'(Team Penske)(4-12-2017)
UPDATE3: The final appeal for penalties issued to Brad Keselowski and his Penske team from the March 19 race at Phoenix will be April 25. NASCAR will allow crew chief Paul Wolfe to be at this weekend's race at Bristol Motor Speedway. Wolfe, who sat out the race following Phoenix, faces a suspension of two additional races and will have to choose whether he wants to be at Bristol with the possibility of missing the following races at Richmond and Talladega. While a crew chief has limited impact at Talladega because there is little room for adjustments on the car, it is one of the 10 NASCAR playoff tracks.(ESPN.com)
UPDATE4: The date for Team Penske's final appeal of L1-level penalties issued last month has been pushed back one day due to the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series race postponement at Bristol. NASCAR officials said the hearing is now scheduled for 6:00pm/et on Wednesday, April 26 at the NASCAR Research & Development Center in Concord, North Carolina. It previously had been scheduled for Tuesday. Bryan Moss, the National Motorsports Final Appeals Officer, will preside over the hearing. The session will determine the final outcome of penalties issued March 22 to the Roger Penske-owned #2 Ford team after the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series race at Phoenix Raceway. Team Penske filed the paperwork for a final appeal April 13, one day after the three-member National Motorsports Appeal Panel upheld the original penalties. That punishment included a three-race suspension for crew chief Paul Wolfe and a 35-point deduction for Brad Keselowski in the drivers' standings and the same amount for Penske in the owners' standings. With the appeal pending, a Team Penske official indicated that Wolfe is scheduled to be atop the pit box for Monday's Food City 500 at Bristol. Wolfe already has served one race of his three-race suspension, handing over the helm to Brian Wilson for the March 26 race at Auto Club Speedway.
Moss, the former president at Gulfstream Aerospace, has held the role of National Motorsports Final Appeals Officer since 2014. His ruling on April 26 will be final. The burden of proof will rest with Team Penske in the final appeal process. In the initial hearing, the burden of proof rested with NASCAR.(NASCAR.com)(4-24-2017)
UPDATE 5 Brad Keselowski crew chief Paul Wolfe plans to continue to work races as the Team Penske final appeal hearing scheduled for Wednesday was postponed to May 9. NASCAR Final Appeals officer Bryan Moss had to reschedule the hearing because he became ill.(ESPN.com)(4-26-2017)
UPDATE 6; Brad Keselowski crew chief Paul Wolfe will sit out this weekend's race at Talladega Superspeedway to serve the second race of a three-race suspension for penalties from the March 19 race at Phoenix. Team Penske has a final appeal of the penalties scheduled for next Tuesday, but Wolfe will sit out as a preemptive move in case the appeal fails, which would then require him to only sit out next week at Kansas but return for the all-star and 600-mile race weekends at Charlotte. Engineer Brian Wilson will take his place at Talladega.(ESPN.com)(5-2-2017)

UPDATE: Stewart-Haas Racing team has dropped its appeal of penalties issued last week for an unapproved track bar slider assembly used during the March 19 race at Phoenix, according to a NASCAR spokesman. Crew chief Rodney Childers will serve a one-race suspension this weekend at Martinsville. Harvick was docked 10 points and Childers fined $25,000 for the violation. Harvick, on his weekly SiriusXM show, said: 'It's kind of like growing up as a kid -- sometimes you get in trouble and you have to suffer the consequences.'[More](3-28-2017)
